I started working in 1957 as a laboratory assistant testing oils and essences for the food and perfumery trades, then in the physics department of a ladies’ university, setting up experiments for post-graduate students. On to processing returns of defective X-ray & image intensifier tubes for Mullards Ltd., then part owner of a small grocery store on Dartmoor in Devon.
I joined the Civil Service; at the Thames North Area office of Social Security in London, and was trained as Treasurer for the office.
Transferred to the Science Research Council (SRC). Started by paying university invoices; moved to Superannuation department, calculating retirement pensions, then into the support of committees comprising senior academics and industrialists dispensing Government money for research and advanced studentships in many different disciplines. Making all meeting arrangements, noting financial decisions and assisting with announcements to successful candidates.
I stayed in SRC - SERC- EPSRC nearly 30 years; trained as first line help support for office equipment and Microsoft Office programmes’ users, as first line company counsellor, and attained, amongst others NVQ, RSA and Microsoft certificates, Advanced Diplomas in ‘Computer Applications’ and ‘Business and Office Technology’, City & Guilds level 3. Was a First Aider for most of my working life and also a fire warden.
Met Maurice and we moved to Crete in 2005. We joined IN.CO. when the membership fee was 20 euro per year! I spent time as the Group’s Treasurer, and Maurice developed the first INCO website.
